NOIDA: India’s healthcare sector and educational campuses are expanding rapidly, with a huge cash injection provided by government. An estimated 520 billion rupees is being allocated to the educational sector, while the health sector has been allocated approximately 267 billion rupees. The massive expansion in these sectors has resulted in infrastructure being developed to make provisions for energy services.

One of the major initiatives in achieving this goal is being led by The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy who is implementing a national programme on Solar Water Heating. As part of the MNRE campaign, IT Power, a leading sustainable energy consultancy, is organising six awareness workshops on Solar Water Heating and other Renewable Energy Technologies for the Healthcare Sector and on Educational Campuses across six cities in India. These cities are Noida, Aizawl, Coimbatore, Jaipur, Nagpur and Lucknow.

The main objective of the campaign is to promote and accelerate the application of Solar Water Heating and other Renewable Energy Technologies like solar photovoltaic, biogas generation, solar thermal concentrators and energy efficiency in hospitals and nursing homes as well as hostels and cafeterias. IT Power will also help interested institutions to prepare detailed project reports (DPRs) and proposals for solar water heating systems in order to avail central financial assistance from the Ministry under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission. Apart from this, IT Power will also present 20 case studies on Renewable Energy deployment in different healthcare and educational institutions providing best practice and technical know-how.

IT Power successfully conducted its first workshop on 9th September 2011 at The Mosaic Hotel, Sector 18, Noida. The workshop discussed the technology, economics, feasibility, policies and subsidies with experiences shared by prominent policy makers and industry experts. The workshop was attended by members belonging to the healthcare sector and educational campuses.

The workshop’s first session was inaugurated by Dr. Bibek Bandopadhyay, Advisor to MNRE and Head of the Solar Energy Centre. The session also had Mr. Pankaj Kumar, Representative from UNDP/GEF, who gave an introduction about the project aim and objectives. Dr Parveen Dhamija, Executive Officer, Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy Management Centre, Government of NCT, Delhi, explained about the Delhi government’s initiatives to promote solar water heating systems in the NCR region. In addition, she encouraged the attendees to contact her in case they intend to install the same in their institutions. The second session primarily consisted of technology suppliers like Anu Solar and TATA BP Solar, who provided details of the technology and the approximate cost analysis for the products. This session also saw representatives from Indian Spinal Injuries Centre, TERI University, Birla Institute of Management and Technology (BIMTECH) who provided insights into the benefits of the renewable energy system installations in their institutions and also answered questions about the potential challenges in installing these systems. IT Power representatives, in the third session, provided information about the government’s financing models and incentives made available for such initiatives.

The workshop concluded with the interactive session where practical issues and challenges of installing renewable energy systems were discussed. Some of the main concerns raised were about the durability of systems due to the varying water qualities available at different locations; this question was addressed by the system suppliers who suggested having customised solutions, instead of standardised products, with appropriate water testing mechanisms before installations. Potential end users were also curious about after sales and maintenance costs of the systems. The inaugural training session was well received and the attendees were interactive and thankful for such an initiative taken by MNRE and IT Power.
